Jammu and Kashmir’s Unemployment Rate Higher Than National Average
The Jammu and Kashmir Government recently revealed in the Legislative Assembly that the Union Territory’s current overall unemployment rate is 6.7%, significantly surpassing the national average of 3.5%. This information was provided in response to a question raised by MLA Mubarak Gul.
According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate among individuals aged 15 years and above in J&K has been consistently above the national average in recent years. The government also highlighted the findings of a baseline survey conducted in collaboration with the Union Territory Administration under Mission YUVA.
The survey identified 4.73 lakh individuals between 18-60 years of age, with nearly 46.8% expressing a willingness to work but currently not employed. This underscores the significant employment challenges faced by the youth in the region.
Focusing on Employment Generation
The government emphasized that addressing unemployment, especially among the youth, is a top priority. Efforts are being made to not only provide short-term job opportunities but also to create sustainable livelihoods by encouraging youth to become entrepreneurs rather than job seekers.
One of the key initiatives highlighted is Mission YUVA, aimed at promoting entrepreneurship in Jammu and Kashmir. The response to this mission has been positive, with around 70,000 applications received on the YUVA platform, indicating a growing interest in entrepreneurship among the youth.
Notably, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for approximately 52,875 applicants have been prepared, with 16,141 cases already sanctioned by banks. Handholding support, training, and mentoring have been provided to the sanctioned beneficiaries to ensure their success as entrepreneurs.
Employment Schemes and Roadmap
The Labour and Employment Department shared details of beneficiaries covered under various self-employment and entrepreneurship schemes in the last two financial years. These include Mission YUVA, Mumkin, Tejaswini, Spurring Entrepreneurship Scheme, and Women Entrepreneurship Programme.
The government reiterated its commitment to reducing unemployment and enhancing youth engagement in economic activities through a comprehensive employment policy and roadmap titled “Mission YUVA: From Aspiration to Enterprise – Transforming Jammu & Kashmir’s Employment Landscape.”
The Minister In-charge of the Labour and Employment Department presented this mission-based approach in the Legislative Assembly, emphasizing its goal of inclusive growth and long-term employment generation across the Union Territory.
Overall, the government’s efforts to tackle unemployment and promote entrepreneurship in Jammu and Kashmir are crucial steps towards empowering the youth and driving economic growth in the region.
