Knife Attack in Ufa Injures Four Indian Students
On February 8, a disturbing incident unfolded in Ufa, Russia, as four Indian students fell victim to a knife attack, as confirmed by the Indian Embassy in Moscow.
According to a statement released by the Indian Embassy on social media, the unfortunate attack left several individuals injured, including the four Indian students.
Assuring prompt action, the Embassy mentioned that they are actively coordinating with local authorities, with Consulate officials from Kazan en route to Ufa to provide necessary assistance to the injured students.
While further details are yet to surface, the gravity of the situation is evident, highlighting the vulnerability of Indian students studying abroad.
Government’s Response to Ensuring Safety of Indian Students Overseas
In a related development, the Indian Government recently apprised the Parliament of the distressing trend of Indian students losing their lives due to violent attacks overseas between 2018 and 2025.
Shockingly, the data revealed that 17 students met their untimely demise in Canada, followed by 9 in the USA, with Australia also witnessing three tragic incidents among others.
Emphasizing the paramount importance of safeguarding Indian students abroad, the Government reiterated its commitment to closely monitoring any violence perpetrated against them. Immediate action is taken by Indian Missions/Posts abroad in collaboration with host country authorities to investigate such incidents thoroughly and ensure justice for the victims.
Furthermore, the Government underscored its proactive approach to maintaining the safety of Indian students studying overseas. Indian Missions/Posts regularly engage with students enrolled in foreign universities, providing pre-orientation sessions to educate them on potential risks, challenges, and necessary precautions while pursuing their education abroad. Periodic advisories are also issued to keep students informed and prepared.
Responding to an inquiry by AIMIM MP Owaisi, MoS MEA Kirti Vardhan Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of Indian students abroad, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance and support mechanisms to protect them from harm.
