India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the country’s unwavering stance on terrorism during his visit to Malaysia, stating that there would be “no double standards and no compromise” on this issue. He also expressed India’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Malaysia in areas such as counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and maritime security.
In a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and highlighted the deep historical ties between India and Malaysia as maritime neighbors. He credited PM Ibrahim for his significant contributions in strengthening the bilateral relationship in recent years.
The two leaders discussed the progress made in various sectors such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, digital economy, biotech, and IT. They also emphasized the importance of enhancing security cooperation, including counter-terrorism efforts, intelligence sharing, and maritime security.
PM Modi highlighted the potential for further collaboration in areas such as AI, digital technologies, semiconductor, health, and food security. He also mentioned the successful CEO forum that opened up new opportunities for trade and investment between the two nations.
On the issue of terrorism, PM Modi reiterated India’s firm stance and expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties. He emphasized the need for continued support for peacekeeping efforts while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
PM Modi praised the Indian diaspora in Malaysia as a “living bridge” between the two countries and highlighted measures taken for their welfare, such as the Social Security Agreement and a gratis e-visa. He also mentioned the importance of the Tamil language in connecting India and Malaysia, emphasizing the cultural ties between the two nations.
The Prime Minister underscored the Indo-Pacific region’s significance as a hub of global growth and reaffirmed India’s commitment to development, peace, and stability in the region. He also congratulated Malaysia on its successful ASEAN leadership and expressed India’s intention to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries.
During their meeting, both leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral ties across various sectors, including defence and security. PM Modi’s visit to Malaysia is seen as a significant step towards deepening the enduring friendship between the two countries, based on mutual trust, shared values, and common aspirations for the future.
