Jammu and Kashmir MLA Seeks Withdrawal of FIRs Against Youth for Solidarity with Palestine
Member of the Ethics Committee of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and MLA from Budgam, Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, has made a plea for the withdrawal of FIRs lodged against youth in the region who expressed solidarity with Palestine. In a formal communication addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Aga Syed Muntazir emphasized the need for intervention in cases involving peaceful youth activism.
The MLA highlighted that FIRs were filed against young individuals who voiced humanitarian concerns related to Palestine. He argued that such expressions should not be treated as criminal activities, as these youths posed no threat to public order. Aga Syed Muntazir pointed out that criminal proceedings could have lasting social and psychological implications.
Aga Syed Muntazir stressed that Kashmir’s youth have a history of engaging with global humanitarian issues. He suggested that addressing such concerns should be approached from a democratic and compassionate perspective rather than a punitive one. The MLA believed that withdrawing the FIRs would convey a positive message and help build trust between the administration and the younger generation.
Furthermore, Aga Syed Muntazir advocated for reconciliation and dialogue over criminalization to uphold democratic values and social harmony in the region. He urged the Union Home Ministry to review the cases on humanitarian grounds and exercise discretion for the greater cause of justice.
During the ongoing Assembly proceedings, the MLA raised the issue as part of a broader discussion on youth engagement and civil liberties. He emphasized the importance of preserving democratic values and promoting social harmony in the region through understanding and dialogue.
This call for the withdrawal of FIRs against Kashmiri youth for showing solidarity with Palestine reflects the MLA’s commitment to upholding civil liberties and promoting peaceful activism in the region.
