Concerns Over Disempowerment of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and MLA M Y Tarigami recently voiced his concerns over what he perceives as the “disempowerment” of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Despite having received a public mandate, elected representatives are facing difficulties in exercising their authority.
During a discussion on the lieutenant governor’s address in the Assembly, Tarigami noted the disconnect between the appreciation of the public mandate in the assembly elections and the actual lack of empowerment within the House. He emphasized the need for the Assembly to be more empowered to fulfill its duties effectively.
He highlighted the importance of addressing the ecological vulnerability in Jammu and Kashmir, calling for greater attention to environmental protection due to the region’s fragile ecosystem. Tarigami also raised concerns about the high unemployment rate in the region and urged the government to prioritize job creation to tackle this pressing issue.
Addressing the topic of reservation, Tarigami stressed the importance of balancing the rights of socially underprivileged communities with the need to support meritorious students. He called for a detailed debate in the Assembly on reservation rationalization and urged the government to implement the recommendations of a committee on this issue.
Furthermore, Tarigami expressed dissatisfaction with the inadequate disaster relief and restoration efforts in flood-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir. He called on the government to provide adequate assistance to affected families who have suffered losses due to floods.
On the security situation in the Valley, Tarigami raised concerns about the alleged harassment of individuals based on minor or unverified allegations. He emphasized the importance of winning people’s trust and ensuring that unnecessary detentions under the Public Safety Act are not prolonged.
Lastly, Tarigami called for the strengthening of democratic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing the need for the government to focus on restoring public confidence and addressing governance issues effectively. He urged authorities to respect the concerns raised by elected representatives in the Assembly and fulfill commitments made during official addresses.
In conclusion, Tarigami stressed the importance of democratic empowerment of the Assembly and urged the government to prioritize the well-being of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
