Addressing Mental Distress in Kashmir: PDP MLA Criticizes NC-led Government
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Para recently voiced his criticism towards the National Conference-led government for its lack of empathy towards the mental distress affecting the Kashmiri population. He specifically referred to the vision document presented by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the beginning of the Budget session in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
During his address, Para highlighted the alarming statistics revealing the extent of mental distress in Kashmir. He mentioned that 45% of the youth are experiencing deep mental distress, 41% are depressed, 26% are anxious, and one in five individuals are suffering from PTSD. The Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences in Srinagar sees 300-400 patients daily, with a total of 2.03 lakh OPD cases in 2024 alone.
Despite these distressing figures, Para lamented the lack of empathy shown in the Jammu and Kashmir vision document. He emphasized that the region is not just a matter of law and order but a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent attention. Para urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to shift the focus of governance towards healing and reconciliation efforts.
Moreover, Para has taken a proactive step by submitting a notice to move a Private Member’s Bill during the Budget Session. The proposed “Jammu and Kashmir Reconciliation, Trauma Healing and Dignity Bill, 2026” aims to address the psychological trauma, emotional distress, and social harm stemming from years of violence and instability in the Union Territory.
This legislative initiative underscores the importance of recognizing and addressing the long-standing impacts of trauma in Kashmir. It seeks to provide a framework for reconciliation and healing processes to foster a more resilient and cohesive society.
