India, US Working Towards Closing Trade Deal Quickly: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal revealed that negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement between India and the US are progressing well, with both countries aiming to finalize the deal swiftly.
Goyal expressed optimism that positive developments in this regard will be announced soon.
He emphasized that each free trade agreement is unique, and the ongoing negotiations with the US are promising. Goyal highlighted the strong working relationship and personal friendship he shares with his American counterpart.
Regarding the timeline for the India-US trade pact, Goyal stated that trade agreements do not have fixed deadlines and will be concluded at the appropriate time for both nations’ interests.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently met with US Ambassador Sergio Gor to discuss various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade and defence cooperation.
Jaishankar is set to visit Washington for a ministerial meeting on critical mineral supply chains, where he is expected to engage in discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Efforts to finalize the trade deal have been ongoing, with a delegation from the US Trade Representative’s office visiting India for trade talks.
Addressing concerns about Indian purchases of Russian oil impacting bilateral relations, Goyal clarified that any misunderstandings have been largely resolved.
India and the US are focused on finalizing the initial phase of the trade agreement, with both sides working towards enhancing economic ties and resolving trade disputes.
