Israel to Reopen Gaza-Egypt Border Crossing After Two-Year Closure
After nearly two years of closure, Israel announced on Friday that it will reopen Gaza’s border crossing with Egypt in both directions over the weekend. This decision will allow Palestinians to enter and leave the territory, marking a significant development in the region.
COGAT, the Israeli military body responsible for coordinating aid to Gaza, stated that only limited movement of people would be permitted through the crossing.
The reopening of the Rafah crossing on Sunday is a crucial step forward for US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan. This crossing, which serves as Gaza’s primary gateway to the outside world, has been largely shut since May 2024.
Both Israel and Egypt will conduct thorough screenings of individuals for exit and entry through the crossing. Additionally, European Union border patrol agents will supervise the operations at the border.
Palestinians who had left Gaza during the conflict will now have the opportunity to return, provided they obtain Israeli security clearance.
Initially hesitant to reopen the crossing, Israel’s decision was influenced by the successful recovery of the remains of the last hostage in Gaza on Monday, clearing the way for progress.
