Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Thrives Despite Challenges
Jammu and Kashmir has seen a remarkable surge in tourism, welcoming 1.61 crore visitors in 2025 until November, despite facing challenges such as the Pahalgam terror incident and floods. Lt Governor Manoj Sinha highlighted the government’s efforts in revitalizing the tourism sector during the Republic Day celebration.
The region’s economy is thriving, with an estimated 11% growth rate at current prices, driven by government initiatives and strategic policies. Sinha emphasized the crucial role of the tourism industry in the Union territory’s economy, which was recognized as an industry in 2020 to attract more investments.
Efforts are ongoing to develop world-class tourist destinations, with support from the Union tourism ministry and external funding agencies. Sinha mentioned the identification of nine new tourist spots for development in alignment with international standards.
Highlighting the Kashmir Marathon as a flagship sports tourism initiative, Sinha emphasized the region’s potential as a global hub for sports and wellness tourism. The Jammu Marathon has also been launched to promote destination branding and unity.
The economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir is evident, with the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) estimated at Rs 2,62,458 crore for 2024-25. Industrial transformation is underway, with thousands of units starting production, generating employment opportunities.
The administration is dedicated to the welfare of Kashmiri migrant families, with housing schemes and health insurance benefits extended to them. Sinha called for collective support to build a prosperous and unified Jammu and Kashmir, where opportunities are abundant for all.
