WCA Expresses Concern Over Bangladesh’s Exit from T20 World Cup
The World Cricket Association (WCA) has expressed deep concern over Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the upcoming T20 World Cup, calling it a “sad moment” that warrants thoughtful reflection. This decision comes after the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that Scotland will replace Bangladesh in the tournament, citing logistical challenges in accommodating Bangladesh’s request to shift their matches to Sri Lanka.
WCA CEO Tom Moffat stated, “The absence of Bangladesh from cricket’s pinnacle international T20 event is a loss for the sport, the players, and fans. This situation calls for us to reflect on the implications of such a significant decision.” The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) declined to send their team to India due to security concerns following Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL.
Despite the BCB’s apprehensions, the ICC maintained that there was no verifiable security threat to the Bangladesh national team, officials, or supporters in India. The decision to uphold the event schedule as planned was made to ensure fairness and consistency in the tournament.
WCA, a global organization representing professional cricketers from various countries, emphasized the importance of treating all teams and players with respect and providing them with equal opportunities to compete. Moffat highlighted the need for meaningful consultation with players and their representatives to uphold the integrity of the game.
Concerns over the current operating model of global cricket were raised, with Moffat pointing out issues such as agreements not being honored and rights being eroded. The WCA called for unity among cricket stakeholders to address these challenges and safeguard the future of the sport.
At a recent ICC Board meeting, Bangladesh’s proposal to relocate matches was rejected by an overwhelming majority, underscoring the need for reflection and collaboration within the cricket community. The WCA urged leaders in the sport to work together to promote inclusivity and enhance the overall health and success of cricket.
As players and associations worldwide stand in solidarity with Bangladesh players who will miss out on the T20 World Cup, the WCA reiterated its commitment to supporting the growth of cricket globally. Collaborative efforts with the BCB and other stakeholders are essential to strengthen the sport and ensure a bright future for cricket.
