Unprecedented Snowfall in Kashmir Valley and Rains in Jammu
Following heavy snowfall and rain across parts of Kashmir Valley and Jammu, the Western Disturbance has now moved out of the region. Weather experts have forecasted dry weather for the next 48 hours starting Saturday morning.
After a significant snowfall on Friday, additional inches of snow were recorded overnight in Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla, Budgam, Bandipora, and Kishtwar. The town of Rajouri also experienced a rare snowfall spell, with areas that had not seen snow in nearly a decade being covered in white. This unusual occurrence has been attributed to a strong cold air mass associated with the Western Disturbance, causing a sharp drop in temperatures even in typically warmer regions.
Weather experts predict that Jammu and Kashmir will experience mostly dry conditions for the next 48 hours. However, another Western Disturbance is expected to arrive on Monday afternoon, potentially bringing light to moderate rain and snowfall in various parts of the Union Territory.
Meanwhile, due to adverse weather conditions, the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road remain closed. Authorities advise commuters to avoid traveling on these routes until they are deemed safe for traffic. It is recommended to check road status only through official Traffic Police channels or Traffic Control Units to avoid misinformation.
Several flights have been cancelled at Srinagar airport on Saturday morning. An airport official cited a NOTAM in force at Delhi Airport and unfavorable weather conditions at Srinagar as the reasons for the cancellations. Passengers are advised to verify the latest flight status with their respective airlines before heading to the airport to avoid inconvenience.
Overall, the recent weather patterns in Jammu and Kashmir have brought both beauty and challenges, highlighting the importance of staying informed and prepared for unexpected weather events. Stay updated with official sources for the latest information and travel recommendations.
