Heavy Snowfall and Rainfall Cause Traffic Suspension on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway
On January 23, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway experienced a suspension of traffic due to heavy snowfall and rainfall in various areas, as reported by officials. The inclement weather conditions left hundreds of vehicles stranded in Udhampur, Chanderkote, and other locations.
The halt in vehicular movement was prompted by snowfall in the Qazigund-Ramsu sectors and continuous rain in Udhampur and Ramban, making road conditions slippery and unsafe. As a precautionary measure, all traffic was stopped, and vehicles were parked at secure locations along the highway.
Officials noted that the incessant rainfall and accumulation of snow up to Ramsu led to the suspension of traffic. Travellers have been advised to refrain from unnecessary movement until weather conditions improve.
Significant snow accumulation of over a foot was reported in Banihal and nearby areas, with snowfall ongoing. Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Raja Adil Hamid, confirmed the snow depths in Banihal and Nashri area of Batote, urging caution.
Approximately 900 vehicles, including nearly 500 passenger Light Medium Vehicles (LMVs), were halted at safe locations as a precautionary measure. Additionally, the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway was also closed due to snow accumulation in Nashri and Batote areas, with NH-44 remaining closed until late Friday evening.
