Anticipated Weather Changes in Jammu and Kashmir: Relief from Prolonged Dry Spell Expected
Amidst a prolonged dry spell in the region, Jammu and Kashmir is currently facing a significant 96 per cent rainfall deficit this month. However, there is hope on the horizon as weather conditions are expected to undergo a substantial shift with the arrival of two Western Disturbances in quick succession in the coming days.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued a weather advisory indicating that the first of these systems, which is anticipated to be more intense, is likely to impact J&K and surrounding areas from January 22 to 24, with the peak activity expected on January 23. Following closely behind, the second, relatively moderate system is forecasted to affect the region from the night of January 26 to the forenoon of January 28, reaching its peak on January 27.
These weather systems are expected to bring widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir, with heavy precipitation likely at isolated locations, especially during the peak activity days.
The Meteorological Department has highlighted that the first system is likely to result in heavy snowfall and rainfall over the Pir Panjal range, including the Chenab Valley in Jammu Division and the middle and higher reaches of South Kashmir. Areas such as Anantnag, Pahalgam, Kulgam, Shopian, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and various passes and districts are expected to be significantly impacted. Similar effects, though of a moderate to heavy nature, are anticipated during the second system as well.
As per the advisory sent to Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, there is a potential for disruptions to surface and air transport, including the Jammu–Srinagar Highway and other major roads in elevated regions. Landslides, mudslides, and gusty winds ranging from 40 to 60 kmph are also expected at vulnerable locations.
With this forecast in mind, travelers, tourists, and transporters are advised to plan their journeys carefully. Residents in snow-bound areas are cautioned against venturing into avalanche-prone zones, while farmers are recommended to suspend certain agricultural activities during this period.
The upcoming spell of rain and snowfall is anticipated to offer much-needed relief from the prevailing dry conditions, which have raised concerns regarding water availability, agriculture, and horticulture across Jammu and Kashmir.
