The Struggle for Freedom in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir
In Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK), the people face a constant battle against systematic repression, where their leaders are intimidated, and citizens are deprived of basic rights and freedom of expression.
Lack of Autonomy and Control
While POJK is labeled as an autonomous region, the reality is far from it. The Pakistani government and its military hold the reins of power, overshadowing the local political leaders who have little authority to make independent decisions. The appointment of key administrators is heavily influenced by Pakistan, disregarding the wishes of the locals.
Exploitation and Economic Injustice
Pakistan’s exploitation extends beyond politics to natural resources like hydropower projects and forests, favoring mainland Pakistan while leaving POJK residents grappling with unemployment and underdevelopment. The economic and political liberties of the people are compromised as the region is treated as a land to be controlled for vested interests.
Persecution of Political Dissent
Political leaders who challenge Pakistan’s authority are met with intimidation, harassment, and threats. Expressing reservations about policies or advocating for self-rule leads to labeling as “anti-state” and persecution. Even elected leaders fear persecution and remain silent on critical issues.
Suppression of Rights and Freedom
Attempts at peaceful assembly are met with severe oppression, with security agencies resorting to curfews and live ammunition to quell demonstrations. The freedom of press and media is limited, with journalists facing threats and arrest for covering sensitive issues.
Human Rights Violations and Social Suppression
Social and political activists, students, and workers protesting against Islamabad’s policies face arbitrary arrests and persecution. Civic groups striving for better living conditions are targeted, perpetuating economic exploitation and social alienation.
International Criticism and Unrest
The denial of basic freedoms and political autonomy in POJK has drawn criticism from international bodies and human rights organizations. The region remains plagued by unrest and dissatisfaction among its people due to the oppressive regime.
Political Helplessness and Social Isolation
The political leadership in POJK is effectively silenced, leaving citizens without a voice in governance. The influence of Islamabad on the region’s affairs suppresses opposition and restricts access to information, rendering the populace politically helpless and socially isolated.
Continued Struggle for Freedom
POJK remains under the firm control of the Pakistani regime, stifling political dissent and freedom of speech. As long as repressive conditions persist, the voices of the region’s inhabitants will continue to be unheard.
