BJP Legislator Advocates for Separate Jammu Region
BJP legislator Vikram Randhawa from Bahu constituency in Jammu reiterated the demand for a separate Jammu region, citing the prolonged domination of Jammu by Kashmir as the primary reason. He emphasized that this demand stemmed from historical imbalances and the need for equitable representation.
Randhawa highlighted the historical context by mentioning how Kashmir had previously overshadowed Ladakh as well, until Ladakh was granted separate Union Territory status. He clarified that the intention behind the demand was not for separation but to address the long-standing issue of Jammu being subdued by Kashmir.
Regarding the proposed National Law University, Randhawa insisted that Jammu should be the exclusive location for the institution. He emphasized that efforts would be made to persuade the Centre to establish the National Law University in Jammu, stating firmly that it would either be in Jammu or not at all.
Emphasizing Jammu’s academic growth, Randhawa noted that the city has become a prominent education hub, attracting students from various regions, including Kashmir. He mentioned the increasing number of Kashmiri students pursuing their studies in Jammu, underscoring the educational opportunities available in the region.
However, Randhawa also raised concerns about the lack of reciprocity in educational exchanges, pointing out that students from Jammu faced challenges and harassment while studying in Kashmir. This asymmetry in student mobility highlighted the need for a more inclusive and supportive educational environment in both regions.
