The Significance of Jammu and Kashmir in India’s National Security
The Northern Army Commander, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, emphasized the critical role of Jammu and Kashmir in India’s national security architecture during the 10th Veterans-Day celebrations in Rajouri.
Lt Gen. Sharma highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir is not only strategically important due to its geographical location but also serves as a vital pillar of the nation’s core security framework, boasting strong military ethos and abundant human resources.
He praised the region’s significant contributions to the armed forces, noting that with a population of nearly 1.5 crore, Jammu and Kashmir accounts for approximately 4 to 5 percent representation in India’s border security forces.
The Army commander commended the rich military legacy of the region, citing the exemplary performance of prestigious regiments such as the JAK Rifles, JAK Light Infantry, and Dogra units in various wars as a source of pride for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He pointed out that the Union Territory is home to nearly 45,000 veterans and 975 “Veer Nari” who continue to serve the country in different capacities, contributing to disaster management and civic roles.
Recognition of Veterans’ Contributions
Lt Gen. Sharma acknowledged the invaluable contributions of veterans during Operation Sindoor, highlighting their experience, local knowledge, and bravery in boosting troop morale in border areas.
He mentioned that a series of commemorative programs were organized as part of the 10th Veterans-Day celebrations, culminating in a closing ceremony at Rajouri, with a special mention of the Dhruv motorcycle rally covering challenging terrain.
Medical camps were set up in various areas to provide assistance to soldiers, veterans, Veer Naris, and their families, distributing essential medical equipment and facilitating healthcare access.
Commitment to Veteran Welfare
Lt Gen. Sharma assured continued support for veteran welfare, emphasizing the Army’s collective responsibility towards addressing their concerns and needs.
He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Army and civil administration in implementing welfare schemes for veterans, ensuring tangible outcomes in remote and border areas.
The Army commander expressed gratitude to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the civil administration for their support and cooperation in advancing veteran welfare initiatives.
