Remembering Farhat Gilani: A Kashmiri Poet’s Legacy
By Syed Majid Gilani
I have a vivid memory of the day I visited the shrine of Hazrat Syed Mirakh Shah Kashani at Shalimar.
While there, my eyes caught sight of a Persian poem inscribed on the wall, a creation of Farhat Gilani dedicated to one of Mirakh Sahib’s Khalifas.
Reading those verses slowly, I felt a profound connection to our culture, faith, and the narratives that have shaped us.
This poem truly reflected the essence of its creator.
Although I didn’t have many close interactions with Farhat Gilani, the few meetings we had were brief yet impactful.
From those encounters and the words of others, I recognized him as a man of knowledge, kindness, and subtle grace.
Born as Syed Mohammad Aslam Gilani, he was the son of Maulana Syed Mubarak Shah Gilani, a renowned Persian scholar and poet also known as Fitrat Kashmiri.
Growing up in Khanqahi Moulla, Farhat was immersed in a world of poetry, scholarship, and piety, inheriting a deep love for Persian and Urdu languages from his father.
His name, Farhat, meaning freshness and solace, truly embodied his persona.
Farhat Gilani was a multifaceted individual – a poet, playwright, translator, broadcaster, news anchor, and television personality.
Each role he undertook was executed with care and compassion, enriching Kashmir’s literary and spiritual realms with clarity and sensitivity.
His words carried a gentle sincerity that resonated with many.
I fondly recall his heartfelt Naatiya Kalam that often graced radio and TV broadcasts, showcasing devotion, humility, and longing with a genuine touch.
Beyond his literary prowess, Farhat Gilani was a warm and composed individual who treated everyone with kindness.
He held deep reverence for relationships, constantly emphasizing the importance of respecting elders, cherishing family, and upholding moral values.
During a visit to his home in Fitrat Abad, Sheikhpora, he graciously presented me with a handwritten biography of my great-grandfather, a gesture reflecting his profound respect for family, heritage, and generosity.
More than just a poet, Farhat Gilani was a community-oriented individual who maintained a delicate balance of learning, humility, and care for those around him.
Individuals like Farhat Gilani leave an indelible mark on our lives, continuing to inspire through their words, teachings, and lasting memories for those willing to pause and reflect.
