Mehbooba Mufti Criticizes Mosque Profiling in Kashmir
Speaking out against the recent profiling of mosques and imams in Kashmir, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti denounced it as interference in the religious affairs of Muslims. She argued that if such profiling were necessary, it should begin with temples across the country.
Expressing her concerns, Mufti stated, “The latest order targeting mosques is an intrusion into our religious matters. If such actions are deemed necessary, they should commence with other religious institutions. Information regarding priests in temples, including details on temple entry for different castes, should also be sought.”
She further criticized the extensive profiling requirements, including photos, Aadhar cards, and detailed information about maulvis and imams, as intimidating and aimed at distancing Muslims from their religion in Jammu and Kashmir.
Highlighting the fear and apprehension among imams and mosque committees due to the profiling exercise, Mufti likened the process to treating them as “over ground workers” rather than religious leaders. She emphasized that mosques should be open to all, regardless of sects, and raised concerns about the potential replication of such profiling nationwide.
Challenging the government to extend similar profiling to gurudwaras and churches, Mufti criticized the silence of authorities on the issue. She expressed worry over the government’s actions, particularly regarding the targeting of mosques that are not even waqf properties.
Addressing the dismissal of government employees based solely on accusations, Mufti questioned the lack of due process and fairness in such decisions, highlighting the underlying prejudices against Muslims.
Mehbooba’s Views on Political Matters
On the demand for a separate Jammu state by some BJP leaders, Mufti cautioned that Jammu would suffer the most if the demand were to be fulfilled. She pointed out the potential repercussions of such a move, drawing attention to the impact on the region.
Regarding the controversy surrounding the National Law University and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s stance on the Indus Water Treaty, Mufti criticized the politicization of water resources. She called for a humane approach, emphasizing the need to consider the consequences of depriving people of essential resources.
Questioning the decisions made by the government, Mufti raised concerns about the losses incurred due to power projects handed over to NHPC. She sought assurances from the authorities regarding compensation for the losses suffered by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In conclusion, Mehbooba Mufti’s statements reflect her strong stance on religious freedom, fair treatment of individuals, and the importance of thoughtful governance in addressing critical issues affecting the region.
