Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s Commitment to Development
Despite facing fiscal constraints, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of Jammu and Kashmir reiterated on Monday the government’s commitment to maintaining the budget framework initiated the previous year. The focus remains on ensuring the progress of ongoing schemes and introducing new initiatives to sustain development momentum.
Addressing concerns surrounding the proposed National Law University (NLU) and allegations of discrimination towards Jammu, Abdullah questioned the timing of such objections, pointing out the establishment of prestigious institutes like the IIT and IIM in the region without similar controversy in the past.
Following a comprehensive review meeting in Jammu district, Abdullah emphasized the need for strategic decision-making, particularly highlighting the unsuitability of January and February for major allocations due to potential lapses in March. He stressed that significant decisions would be integrated into the following year’s budget, with current funds being efficiently utilized and minor gaps addressed.
Walking nearly half a kilometer to the meeting venue at the deputy commissioner’s office, Abdullah was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, Cabinet ministers, Chief Secretary Atal Dhuloo, and MLAs from the Jammu district. He acknowledged the financial challenges faced by Jammu and Kashmir and underscored the importance of continued support from the central government to sustain developmental efforts.
When questioned about allegations of discrimination and demands for relocating the NLU, Abdullah pointed out the historical context of institute establishment in the region, urging patience and trust in the government’s decision-making process. He emphasized the need for equitable development across Jammu and Kashmir and urged stakeholders to wait for the official decision regarding the NLU’s location.
Emphasizing the complexity of budget planning, Abdullah requested understanding from the public, highlighting the need for careful consideration before divulging specific details. He urged for a balanced perspective on regional development initiatives and stressed the government’s commitment to fostering growth across all areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
As discussions continue regarding the NLU’s location, Abdullah maintained a pragmatic approach, emphasizing the importance of balanced development strategies and inclusive decision-making processes. The government’s dedication to advancing development in Jammu and Kashmir remains unwavering, with a focus on sustainable progress and equitable distribution of resources.
