Racket Selling Adulterated Honey and Ghee Uncovered by Food Safety Officials in Srinagar
In a recent development, officials from the Food Safety Department in Srinagar have unearthed a deceitful operation involving the production and sale of fake honey and ghee. This scandalous scheme targeted unsuspecting consumers during the high demand for winter essentials in Kashmir.
The perpetrators behind this fraudulent activity went to great lengths to deceive customers with their “natural honey” and pure desi ghee products. They were found to be concocting counterfeit honey using sugar syrups and passing off hydrogenated oil mixtures as authentic ghee.
Assistant Commissioner Food Safety, Yameen-ul-Nabi, spearheaded a series of raids in the Qamarwari and Barthana areas, collaborating with the DO Police Station Qamarwari in the early hours of Monday morning. Their investigations led them to a makeshift “factory” where these counterfeit products were being manufactured.
Under the guise of authentic Kashmiri goods, the fake honey and ghee were packaged and sold as homemade delicacies. A total of 36 kg of adulterated ghee and 15 kg of fake honey were seized during the operation.
Yameen-ul-Nabi highlighted the discovery of hydrogenated oils and sugar packs that were being used as adulterants in the production of these fake products. Samples of the confiscated items have been sent for laboratory analysis to ascertain the extent of the deception.
The fraudulent module was dismantled following a tip-off, exposing the unscrupulous vendors who were marketing these counterfeit items as premium Kashmiri specialties. This revelation not only undermines public trust but also poses serious health risks to consumers.
As a precautionary measure, the Food Safety Department has advised the public to only purchase food items from trusted sources. Consumers are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
Impact on Public Health and Trust
During the winter season in Kashmir, the demand for natural honey peaks as locals rely on its perceived health benefits. However, the unscrupulous actions of these scammers not only exploit consumers financially by charging exorbitant prices for synthetic products but also jeopardize public health.
The crackdown on vendors selling counterfeit goods in Srinagar markets serves as a warning to those engaging in such fraudulent practices. The authorities are committed to ensuring the availability of safe, authentic, and hygienic food for the residents of Srinagar.
It is imperative for consumers to exercise caution and choose reputable sources when purchasing food items, especially during times of increased demand. By remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities, individuals can play a crucial role in safeguarding the integrity of the food supply chain.
