US Immigration Agent Fatally Shoots Woman in Minneapolis
An incident in south Minneapolis involving a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent has sparked controversy and drawn conflicting accounts from federal authorities and local officials. The incident, which resulted in the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old woman named Renee Nicole Good, occurred during a federal immigration operation. The incident has ignited a political dispute over the enforcement tactics of the Trump administration.
The shooting took place near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue around 9:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The woman was pronounced dead at a hospital after being struck in the head. The ICE agent involved in the shooting claimed self-defense, stating that the woman used her vehicle to threaten officers. However, local leaders, backed by video footage and eyewitness accounts, have rejected this explanation and called for independent investigations.
According to ICE, officers were conducting a targeted operation when protesters blocked them. The agency claimed that the woman attempted to run over law enforcement officers with her vehicle, leading to the agent firing defensive shots in fear for his life.
President Donald Trump defended the agent, stating that the woman had violently run over an ICE officer, prompting the agent to shoot in self-defense. Trump described the incident as “a horrible thing to watch” and emphasized that ICE agents are working to make America safe amidst threats from the Radical Left.
However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed the self-defense claim after reviewing video footage of the shooting, calling it a “garbage narrative.” Witnesses reported that the woman was inside a red Honda Pilot when approached by ICE agents, with conflicting accounts of the events leading up to the shooting.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz rejected the DHS narrative and called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and justice. He activated the state’s Emergency Operations Centre and warned the Minnesota National Guard to prepare for possible unrest while urging peaceful protests.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the incident as an act of domestic terrorism, citing a rise in vehicle-ramming attacks against federal agents. Democratic Congress members condemned the shooting, with Representative Ilhan Omar calling for a comprehensive investigation and legal action against the agency.
The shooting has raised concerns about aggressive enforcement actions by the Trump administration and intensified confrontations between federal agents, local officials, and protesters. The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association urged respect for the investigative process and criticized the rhetoric from political leaders.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI are leading the investigation into the shooting, with efforts to ensure transparency in the process. The incident comes amidst ICE’s “largest ever” immigration enforcement operation, leading to increased tensions in several US cities.
