CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine Empowering Farmers in Jammu through Floriculture Mission
In a significant move towards promoting science-led agrarian transformation and increasing farmers’ income through high-value agri-enterprises, the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, is taking proactive steps to support floriculture farmers in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.
As part of the CSIR Floriculture Mission, the institute is providing comprehensive support and guidance to farmers, aiming to enhance their capacity and scientific skill set. Recently, a workshop on technology dissemination in floriculture and apiculture-based bio-enterprises was organized by CSIR-IIIM, bringing together 230 farmers from different agricultural zones in Jammu.
During the workshop, farmers were equipped with high-yielding varieties of marigold and received training on transitioning from traditional cropping systems to market-oriented agri-bio enterprises. This initiative, supported by science and innovation, aims to boost farmers’ income and create employment opportunities in the region.
The CSIR Floriculture Mission, under the leadership of Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, is revolutionizing the floriculture sector in the UT. Through mentorship and strategic direction, the institute is driving technology-enabled rural entrepreneurship, making laboratory innovations accessible to farmers.
The workshop covered various aspects of floriculture production, from nursery raising to market intelligence, emphasizing important floricultural crops like Lilium, Marigold, Gladiolus, Gerbera, and Carnation. Additionally, integrated apiculture models were discussed, highlighting the role of honeybees in enhancing pollination efficiency and crop productivity.
Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director of CSIR-IIIM Jammu, emphasized the income generation potential and sustainability of floriculture and apiculture-based agri-enterprises. He highlighted the institute’s efforts in providing quality planting material, crop management practices, and market linkages, leading to increased farm productivity and profitability in the region.
Dr. Shahid Rasool, Nodal Scientist of CSIR Floriculture Mission, commended the institute’s role in driving science-based agrarian transformation. The mission’s holistic approach, from planting material to market intelligence, ensures sustainable economic returns for farmers, promoting quick economic growth and resilience.
