Digital Transformation Revolutionizing India’s Dairy Sector
India, known as the world’s largest milk producer, is currently witnessing a significant digital transformation in its dairy industry. This transformation is geared towards enhancing productivity, transparency, and the welfare of dairy farmers. Spearheaded by the National Dairy Development Board, the adoption of technology across the dairy value chain is revolutionizing the way the sector operates.
The shift towards digital platforms is connecting farmers, cooperatives, and other stakeholders in a seamless manner, paving the way for a more efficient and transparent dairy ecosystem. This initiative is not only boosting operational productivity but also ensuring that millions of small and marginal dairy farmers are integrated into a modern, technology-driven environment.
One of the key initiatives driving this digital revolution is the Automatic Milk Collection System, which has already benefited over 17.3 lakh milk producers across 54 milk unions. This system has facilitated transparent payments and improved operational efficiency within the dairy sector. Additionally, the Internet-based Dairy Information System is being utilized by approximately 198 milk unions and 15 federations to support data-driven decision-making and performance benchmarking.
Moreover, the implementation of GIS technology for milk route optimization has proven to be a game-changer for dairy cooperatives in various states. This technology has not only reduced transportation costs but has also enhanced delivery efficiency significantly. These initiatives are aimed at modernizing operations, eliminating inefficiencies, and ensuring traceability throughout the dairy sector.
At the core of this digital push lies the National Digital Livestock Mission, a collaborative effort between NDDB and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. This mission aims to establish a unified digital livestock ecosystem through the platform “Bharat Pashudhan.”
