Jammu & Kashmir Under-16 Cricket Team Clinches Historic Vijay Merchant Trophy
In a momentous achievement for Jammu and Kashmir, the under-16 cricket team secured the Vijay Merchant Trophy (Plate Group) title, marking a significant milestone in the state’s sporting history. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah personally congratulated the victorious team, highlighting their talent, teamwork, discipline, and dedication.
During a morning interaction with the young cricketers, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah individually met each player to discuss their personal and team performance. He commended their exceptional display on the field and encouraged them to maintain their winning momentum while striving for excellence in the future. The Chief Minister also showed a keen interest in the players’ academic pursuits and other interests beyond sports.
Expressing pride in the team’s achievement, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah remarked, “Your victory has not only brought glory to Jammu and Kashmir but also exemplifies the values of teamwork and dedication.” In recognition of their outstanding performance, the Chief Minister presented an appreciation trophy to the team, led by Captain Smagey Khajuria.
The historic win was sealed on January 6 when Jammu and Kashmir defeated Mizoram by an innings and 182 runs in the final held in Surat, Gujarat. This triumph marked the first time Jammu and Kashmir lifted the prestigious Vijay Merchant Trophy, underscoring a proud moment in the state’s sporting legacy.
