Jammu and Kashmir U-16 Team Makes History by Winning First BCCI Title
Surat- The Jammu and Kashmir Under-16 cricket team achieved a historic milestone by securing the Vijay Merchant Trophy Plate Group title, marking the Union Territory’s inaugural BCCI championship victory. Their triumph came after a resounding win over Mizoram by an innings and 182 runs on the third day of the final in Surat.
J&K displayed exceptional prowess to clinch the four-day match with a day to spare, showcasing their cricketing talent and determination.
Commending the outstanding performance, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah extended his congratulations to the victorious U-16 cricket team, highlighting the significance of their triumph in lifting the prestigious Vijay Merchant Trophy.
“A historic BCCI title and a dominant victory that reflects the rising cricketing talent of Jammu & Kashmir,” emphasized the ‘X’ handle of the J&K Chief Minister’s Office, acknowledging the team’s achievement.
J&K established their dominance by securing a formidable first-innings lead of 300 runs, amassing 400 all out in 95.1 overs in response to Mizoram’s total of 100 all out in their first innings.
Captain Smagey Khajuria led from the front with a stellar knock of 102 off 174 balls, embellished with 15 boundaries and a maximum, while Athrav Sharma contributed a crucial unbeaten 92 off 137 deliveries, featuring 17 fours and a six.
Jammu and Kashmir’s bowlers excelled in restricting Mizoram to 118 all out in their second innings, sealing victory on the third day of the match. Sanil Singh (3/15), Jaskaran Singh (2/8), and Hammaad Firdous (2/22) were instrumental in dismantling the opposition’s batting lineup.
In Mizoram’s first innings as well, Sanil and Jaskaran had made significant contributions with three wickets each. The Vijay Merchant Trophy U-16 Elite competition, which commenced on January 4, is scheduled to conclude on January 28.
