Sonamarg Tourists Engage in Dangerous Traffic Violations Amid Snowfall
Visitors to the picturesque tourist destination of Sonamarg in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have been flouting traffic rules, raising serious safety concerns, especially with the recent snowfall creating slippery road conditions.
Witnesses have reported numerous instances of tourists engaging in risky behaviors such as stunt driving on snow-covered roads, leaning out of moving vehicles, dancing on the streets, and taking selfies in the midst of traffic. These actions not only jeopardize the lives of those involved but also pose a significant threat to other commuters and local residents navigating the narrow and icy roads.
Traffic authorities have noted that many visitors seem to believe that conventional traffic regulations do not apply to them, leading to frequent instances of obstruction, reckless driving, and unsafe conduct in and around the resort area. The situation is particularly concerning due to the slippery roads caused by snowfall, increasing the chances of skidding and accidents.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Traffic, Gulzar Ahmed, personally intervened at the scene and counseled a large number of tourists found violating traffic rules. He emphasized that Sonamarg is meant for enjoying its natural beauty in a safe and responsible manner, rather than engaging in stunt driving or risky activities that could result in tragedy.
Ahmed also instructed drivers to use anti-skid chains on their vehicles to navigate the icy roads safely and prevent accidents. He warned that failure to adhere to traffic advisories during winter conditions could result in legal consequences.
The traffic police have reiterated their plea to tourists to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, adhere to road safety regulations, and respect local conditions to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all visitors. ~ KNT
