Ladakh Launches Sports Policy to Boost Talent and Infrastructure
In a significant development, the Lt Governor of Leh-Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, recently unveiled the Union Territory’s new sports policy. The primary goal of this policy is to establish a dedicated Sports Council that will focus on talent identification and infrastructure development.
One of the key components of this policy is the formation of the Ladakh Sports Council. This council will serve as a robust institutional framework for the systematic development of sports in the region, as stated by an official spokesperson.
The Ladakh Sports Council will collaborate closely with sports associations to enhance infrastructure, provide coaching support, offer financial assistance, and engage in long-term planning activities.
During the launch event of the Ladakh sports policy, which was attended by Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, the Lt Governor emphasized that the policy lays out a clear roadmap for fostering a vibrant sports culture, starting from school-level sports to high-performance athletics.
Gupta highlighted that the policy revolves around the principle of ‘scout, facilitate and recognize’, with a focus on early talent identification, quality infrastructure, coaching, and acknowledgment of sporting accomplishments.
He stressed that the introduction of this policy signifies a strong commitment towards shaping the future of Ladakh’s youth and establishing a unique identity for the region through sports.
The Lt Governor pointed out that the policy ensures equal opportunities for all children, irrespective of their background, region, or abilities. Special attention will be given to women athletes and para-athletes.
To encourage young individuals to consider sports as a viable career option, the policy includes initiatives such as a four percent reservation in government jobs for exceptional sportspersons, scholarships, awards, cash incentives, and promotions.
Gupta also highlighted the upcoming sixth edition of the ‘Khelo India Winter Games’ being hosted in Ladakh this month, describing it as a moment of pride for the region.
He mentioned that this event presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase Ladakh’s sports infrastructure, organizational capabilities, and warm hospitality to participants from all corners of the country.
Emphasizing the potential of sports tourism, the Lt Governor noted that Ladakh’s stunning natural landscape and adventure-friendly environment offer numerous possibilities in winter sports, mountaineering, ice sports, and traditional games.
