Minister Sakeena Itoo Celebrates Louis Braille’s 217th Birth Anniversary in Jammu
In a significant event held in Jammu, Minister for Social Welfare, Education, Health, and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, commemorated the 217th birth anniversary of Louis Braille. The celebration honored the inventor of the tactile reading system that has empowered visually impaired individuals worldwide.
The event was attended by Secretary in the Social Welfare department, Bashir Ahmad Khan; Director of Social Welfare Jammu, Ranjeet Singh; Programme Officer ICDS; District Social Welfare Officer Jammu; Superintendent of Rehabilitation Centre for the Speech and Visually Impaired (RSVI) Jammu, along with parents and a large number of visually impaired children.
Minister Itoo emphasized the importance of the event, stating that it was related to social causes. She acknowledged the immense talent of visually impaired children and highlighted the need to tap into their potential for a successful future. She stressed that the progress of society could be measured by the care, dignity, and opportunities provided to its most vulnerable sections.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to social justice and inclusive development, particularly focusing on the welfare and empowerment of specially abled children. Minister Itoo expressed that every child possesses unique gifts and it is the collective responsibility to identify their strengths, nurture their abilities, and ensure they are not left behind.
Calling for a collaborative approach towards supporting specially abled children, Minister Itoo emphasized the need for financial assistance, emotional support, access to quality education, skill development, and an enabling environment to unlock their full potential. She highlighted various initiatives of the Social Welfare Department aimed at early intervention, rehabilitation, inclusive education, and livelihood support for persons with disabilities.
Minister Itoo praised Jammu and Kashmir as a welfare state and lauded the efforts of the Social Welfare Department and RSVI in instilling confidence in children to excel. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the government remains committed to the welfare of specially abled individuals, with a focus on promoting inclusive growth.
Paying tribute to Louis Braille on his 217th birth anniversary, Minister Itoo recognized his contribution in illuminating the lives of visually impaired individuals through the Braille System. She also felicitated visually impaired children who had excelled in sports championships and academic exams.
