The Gig Economy in India: Challenges Faced by Gig Workers
Gig workers in India are facing numerous challenges that are impacting their livelihoods and well-being. From long working hours to inadequate earnings and lack of social security measures, these workers are struggling to make ends meet.
Many gig workers have expressed their concerns about working excessively long hours for minimal daily wages, with no safety net in case of injury or illness. Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, a delivery worker, shared that he earns around Rs 1,300 a day, but incentives have been decreasing steadily.
Another worker, Mahesh, highlighted the pressure to meet daily targets, which often forces them to work beyond their scheduled shifts. He also mentioned the lack of medical support from companies in case of accidents.
Gig worker Shakir Raza raised issues of dignity and safety, mentioning unreasonable demands from customers and penalties for order cancellations. These workers are calling for better understanding and respect from both companies and customers.
Recognizing the challenges faced by gig workers, BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat stated that the government is sensitive to their issues and is committed to addressing their demands. She emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concern for the well-being of gig workers and the importance of labor law reforms.
Amid these concerns, Gig Worker Association secretary Nitesh Kumar Das revealed that gig workers in Delhi are participating in a coordinated flash strike to highlight their grievances. This strike aims to shed light on how platform systems rely on workers’ constant availability without providing basic protections.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha echoed these sentiments, urging online delivery companies to engage in dialogue with gig workers to find fair and humane solutions. He emphasized the need for dignity and justice in the gig economy.
Lastly, the Gig and Platform Service Workers Union announced a nationwide strike to advocate for the rights, welfare, and dignity of gig and platform workers across India. This collective action underscores the importance of addressing the challenges faced by gig workers in the country.
