PDP Leader Iltija Mufti Supports Cricketer Furqan Ul Haq Amid Palestine Flag Controversy
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has voiced her support for cricketer Furqan Ul Haq, who recently sparked controversy by donning a helmet adorned with the Palestine flag during a cricket tournament in Jammu. Mufti defended Haq’s actions, stating that there is nothing wrong with raising awareness about the situation in Gaza.
Her remarks come in response to a preliminary enquiry launched by the Jammu and Kashmir Police following the circulation of videos and photographs showing Haq wearing the Palestine flag on his helmet.
Expressing concern over the growing restrictions on freedom of speech in Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti questioned the need for summoning individuals for expressing their views. She emphasized the importance of standing up for causes such as the plight of civilians in Gaza, referencing global protests against the ongoing violence in the region.
Furthermore, Mufti criticized the perceived crackdown on dissent in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the ban on VPNs and the erosion of the rule of law in the region.
The cricket tournament, which commenced on December 29 in Jammu, has been disavowed by the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, which has stated that it has no affiliation with the event.
Challenges to Ideological Expression in Jammu and Kashmir
In response to reports of the BJP’s opposition to the “Hamas ideology” in Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti underscored the need to resist the imposition of divisive ideologies in the Union Territory. She highlighted instances of violence against Kashmiri students and traders in other states, denouncing the selective outrage prevalent in society.
Mufti also drew attention to incidents of intolerance, such as the recent video involving Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, which she interpreted as disrespectful towards Muslim women. She lamented the prevailing sense of hopelessness in Jammu and Kashmir and criticized the government for failing to address key issues.
Economic Challenges and Governance Concerns
Addressing economic hardships faced by residents, Mufti raised concerns about escalating electricity tariffs in the region. She criticized the government for failing to provide relief to daily wage earners burdened by high electricity bills, particularly during periods of frequent power cuts.
Furthermore, Mufti accused the National Conference government of reneging on its electoral promises, including the provision of free electricity units and opposition to prepaid meters. She highlighted the neglect of essential services such as electricity and rations during the harsh winter months.
Overall, Iltija Mufti’s statements underscore the challenges facing Jammu and Kashmir, from restrictions on freedom of expression to economic hardships and governance issues. Her stance reflects a commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of the people in the region.
