National Sports Governance Act: A Landmark Reform in Indian Sports
New Delhi- The National Sports Governance Act took a significant step forward on Thursday with the initiation of key provisions that pave the way for the establishment of a powerful National Sports Board (NSB) and a Tribunal to handle sports-related disputes, as mandated by the central government.
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya hailed the Act, which was notified on August 18 last year, as the most significant sports reform in the country.
The provisions coming into effect focus on the structure and governance of National Sports Bodies, including the National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee, National Sports Federations (NSFs), and Regional Sports Federations.
According to a press release from the Sports Ministry, specific sections of the Act are being enforced to ensure a smooth transition to the statutory sports governance framework.
One of the key aspects is the formation of Executive Committees within these bodies, which must include at least two Sportspersons of Merit (SOMs) among no more than 15 members.
Furthermore, the establishment of the National Sports Board (NSB) and the National Sports Tribunal (NST) is also underway with the partial implementation.
The NSB, envisioned as a three-member body, will have members appointed by the Central Government based on their expertise in public administration, sports governance, and related fields.
Additionally, the Act outlines the formation of a search-cum-selection committee to recommend suitable candidates for these positions.
From January 1, 2026, the Act’s institutional mechanisms will become fully operational, including the power of the NSB to grant affiliation to NSFs and oversee their financial activities.
NSFs seeking government funding will be required to obtain NSB affiliation, with strict guidelines in place for the age and tenure of board members.
Moreover, the National Sports Tribunal will play a crucial role in adjudicating disputes and upholding the integrity of sports governance in the country.
Empowering Athletes in Sports Administration
The Act also introduces criteria for athletes looking to transition into administrative roles within sports organizations.
Retired athletes with notable achievements, such as Olympic medals or participation in major international events, will be eligible for positions within the National Olympic Committee and other federations.
The criteria vary based on the level of sporting accomplishments, with specific tiers established to recognize athletes’ contributions to Indian sports.
Overall, the National Sports Governance Act represents a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in the management of sports bodies in India.
