Suspects in Murder of Inquilab Moncho Leader Flee to India
Authorities in Bangladesh are on high alert as two primary suspects in the murder of Inquilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi have fled the country and are believed to be currently hiding in India. The incident occurred during an election campaign in Dhaka, where Hadi was tragically shot in the head on December 12. Despite being airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), S N Md Nazrul Islam, revealed that the suspects, identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, managed to escape into the Indian state of Meghalaya with the help of local accomplices. Reports indicate that the fugitives entered India through the Haluaghat border and were assisted by individuals named Purti and Sami, who have reportedly been detained by Indian authorities.
The Bangladesh government is actively collaborating with Indian officials to ensure the arrest and extradition of the suspects. Despite ongoing efforts, the timeline of their escape remains undisclosed.
Hadi, a key figure in the Inquilab Moncho movement, played a significant role in the mass protests that led to political changes in Bangladesh in 2024. He was also set to contest in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The investigation into Hadi’s murder is said to be nearing completion, with a charge sheet expected to be filed within the next seven to ten days. So far, 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with the crime, six of whom have provided confessional statements.
Authorities have confirmed that the murder was premeditated, with the recovery of two pistols allegedly used in the attack. The motorcycle involved in the incident has also been retrieved, along with a significant amount of money linked to the crime.
DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali described Hadi’s killing as a “mysterious” event, hinting at the involvement of multiple perpetrators. Government agencies, including the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), have been tasked with uncovering the masterminds behind the crime.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on bringing justice to the late leader and holding accountable all those involved in the heinous act.
