Jamia Millia Islamia University Suspends Faculty Member Over Controversial Exam Paper
The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has taken action against a faculty member from the Department of Social Work following complaints regarding the content of an end-semester examination paper. The official order issued by the university stated that Prof. Virendra Balaji Shahare has been suspended due to the nature of the questions in the exam paper.
Several complaints were received by the university concerning the end-semester paper titled “Social Problems in India” for the B.A. (Hons) Social Work programme. The question that sparked controversy read: ‘Discuss the atrocities against Muslim minorities in India, giving suitable examples.’
The university officials found negligence and carelessness on the part of Prof. Shahare, leading to his suspension. Saima Saeed, Chief Public Relations Officer at JMI, confirmed the suspension and stated that an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the matter.
As per the suspension letter issued by the Vice-Chancellor under Statute 37(1) of the University’s Statutes, Prof. Shahare has been placed under suspension with immediate effect pending an inquiry. The university also mentioned the possibility of filing a police complaint in accordance with the rules.
During the suspension period, Prof. Shahare is required to stay in New Delhi, as per the order. Any travel outside the city will need prior approval from the competent authority.
Although the university has not disclosed specific details regarding the objections raised against the question paper, the controversy has attracted attention to the incident.
